Khus, the Oil of Tranquility

With powerful antioxidant properties that top those of “standard antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and alpha-tocopherol” (Hyun-Jin, Feng, Wang, Hau Yin, & Zengyu, 2005), vetiver oil is a one-of-a-kind ingredient for many skin conditions.

Origins

Vetiver, or Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn) Nash, is a fragrant, perennial grass that grows up to six feet. Native to South India, its oil is obtained from its roots.

Its Richness

A great ally to achieve tighter skin, thanks to its elastase content, vetiver oil´s tonic properties can relieve inflammation and improve blood circulation. It can effectively balance the skin´s pH due to its sesquiterpene content. Thanks to its antioxidant qualities, this oil protects the skin against environmental stressors and pollution, while its water-retaining capacity keeps the skin moisturized without leaving it oily.

Keep this in your pocket!

Ayurvedic Ancient Wisdom

Vetiver is considered a sacred plant by Ayurveda, as it deems that it is the only herb that holds all of the complex and subtle distinctions of the earth’s aroma. It is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, where Krishna says, “I am the fragrance of the soil." It is an essential component in Abhyanga, as it strengthens the nervous system and relaxes the mind and body.
This oil can pacify Vata thanks to its relaxing effects and calm Pitta due to its coolness. Its capacity to soothe and replenish dry skin, stemming from its dry and light qualities, is a benefit for all three Doshas.

Its Benefits

  • Due to its tannin content, it minimizes redness and inflammation
  • Improves skin regeneration thanks to vetiverol
  • Helps fade scars and reduces the appearance of wrinkles
  • Potent anti-aging properties thanks to its ability to scavenge free radicals because of its levels of flavonoids
  • Vetiver oil´s saponin content makes it a great cleansing ingredient
Vetiver oil is safe in most applications, as long as it is used in moderation. Always do a patch test on a small section of skin before applying it to your face and body. There are not enough studies on vetiver oil’s side effects, but if you are allergic to vetiver, check with your doctor before using vetiver oil.
