Lemongrass

"Infusion and decoction of lemongrass were shown to have free radical scavenging effects...” making it a key component for a fabulous skin ritual.

Origins

Lemongrass, or Cymbopogon Flexuosus, is also known as Bhutrin in Ayurveda and referred to as Indian Verbena. This perennial grass usually grows in clumps that grow up to a height of 5 to 7 feet and has leaves about half that size. Lemongrass is indigenous to tropical regions such as Southeast Asia and South America, even though it is currently found in most countries with warm and moist climates. The scent of lemongrass is fresh with light notes of lemon. The oil is obtained from the leaves and woody stalks of the plant.

Its Richness

Lemongrass oil is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory due to its myrcene, geranyl acetate, nerol, geraniol, and limonene content. It also contains citral, which adds excellent astringent and antiseptic properties, which help provide an even glow to the skin. It serves as a toner, pore cleanser and helps strengthen the skin’s structure and improve its overall texture.

Ayurvedic Ancient Wisdom

Lemongrass oil cools Pitta Dosha and balances Kapha Dosha’s tendency towards oiliness. It has been used in Ayurveda as a stimulant with benefits for both the body and mind. It is an invaluable tridoshic ally, thanks to its wonderful cleansing and detoxifying properties.

Its Benefits

  • Tightens skin and promotes its suppleness
  • Soothes inflammation and redness
  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Has potent anti-inflammatory properties due to its levels of beta-caryophyllene

Lemongrass oil is safe in most applications, as long as it is used in moderation. Always do a patch test on a small section of skin before applying it to your face and body. There are not enough studies on lemongrass oil’s side effects, but if you are allergic to lemongrass, check with your doctor before using lemongrass oil.
